This is Why You Have a Binge Eating Disorder – and How to Stop It

Today I’m going to share with you the science of WHY you can’t stop binge eating – what is actually going on in the brain

Most studies show that binge eating comes from lowered levels of dopamine in the brain- and while that may be true, I’ve discovered an entirely different reason people binge eat.

At brittanywatkins.com and in my weight loss coaching practice I’ve been helping people cure binge eating with an accuracy of 85-90%.

I personally struggled with binge eating myself and have been studying this topic for more than 20 years.

So I’m about to drop some knowledge on you that I only discovered after many many years of experience with this and helping thousands of women stop binge eating.

You ready???

Binge eating is caused by traumatic past experiences and can be cured by applying an 8 step method I developed which I’ll tell you more about at the end of the video above.

So past traumatic experiences can be:

  • Divorce
  • A big move
  • Bullying
  • A younger sibling being born
  • Abuse
  • Ptsd (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
  • Even something as simple as a loud noise or glass breaking

That experience gets stored in our memory centre – A part of our brain called the hippocampus.

Let me explain how the hippocampus works:

The hippocampus is located in the temporal lobe of the brain and it’s understood to be the center of emotion, memory, and the autonomic nervous system.

The amygdala is also located in the temporal lobe – Its primary role is in the processing of memory, decision making, and emotional reactions- you may have also heard this called your fight or flight response.

So when something bad happens to us- someone yells at us for instance- we usually have a reaction to it, we fight, flight or freeze.

Now, this memory gets stored in the hippocampus –

Brain imaging devices show us that there is a little groove or divot where that negative memory is stored.  

Fast forward to today – maybe you have a new boss, and their voice is similar to a person who yelled at you as a kid.  

Every time you talk to this person- you might find yourself eating or feeling nervous. This is because that tiny groove on your hippocampus is getting triggered.

It’s sending a signal to the amygdala which tells your body and this is what you’re trying to soothe, by eating.  

This type of thing is happening all the time-

Think of how many traumatic things might have happened to you over a lifetime- so you have thousands of these tiny divots in your hippocampus that are constantly triggering these past events which are always making you feel stressed, which is why you can’t stop eating.  

This won’t be conscious behaviour most of the time you’ll have no idea what happened to you waaaay back then, you’ll just think – gosh why can’t I stop eating?

It’s actually because something from your past is triggering you.

Now you might be asking yourself,

Ok so how do I stop this?

Traditional addiction therapy tells you to stay with the compulsive feelings for the food-

They teach you to check in with yourself and find out how you’re feeling as a way to identify the trigger.

Well if you’re anything like me I’m sure you’ve tried this method and many others to stop binge eating….

 

and it never works….

 

What you need to do instead is sever the connection from the hippocampus to the amygdala

You can do this with a method called EFT or tapping

What happens when you use tapping is it sends a flood of serotonin to the negative memory on the hippocampus

Which breaks the connection to the amygdala

Which means, you can think about the bad thing that happened, without feeling a physical response to it.

Brain imaging devices show that after using tapping on specific memories, the little divot on the hippocampus is smoothed over.

But here’s the hardest part:

Most people have no idea how to find the negative memories from the past that are causing the binge eating behaviour.

I mean, they are hidden for a reason, right?

That’s part of what I discovered with my method called “echo tapping.”

It’s an 8 step system that allows you to access these hidden memories easily, and heal them in a matter of minutes.
